A discussion on 'Current U.S. and Indian Drug Abuse Laws', co-sponsored by
United States Information Service, (USIS) was held on March 9, 1989, at the
American Center. Among the VIPs and dignitaries present was Mrs. Lois
Herrington, who is the Chairperson, White Conference for a Drug Free America
(1988-1989). Mr. Inder Keswani, General Secretary, Priyadarshni Academy, was the
convener of the programme and prominent dignitaries participated in the
discussion.
It was as a result of the efforts of the Academy that Prof. Ram Punjwani Chowk in Wadala, at road number 33, opposite Krishna Gyan Mandir, was formally re-named by Mr. B.A. Desai, Minister of State for Urban Development, at a function jointly organised by the Bombay Municipal Corporation and Priyadarshni Academy, on March 26,1989.
The Academy announced two new scholarships of Rs. 5,000/- each. Mr. Shyam Chugh scholarship for Engineering students and the Smt. Ishwaribai Chugh Memorial, scholarship for MedicaL / Dentistry students.
An evening of music and dance, 'Sindhi Sangeet Ji Sham', was organised by Priyadarshni Academy at Birla Matu Mr. Sabhagrah, on June 23, 1989, in memory of Prof. Ram Punjwani, Mr. Bhagwanti Navani and Master Chander. Smt. Prabha Rau, Maharashtra's Minister for Revenue and Cultural Affairs was the Chief Guest at the function. The Editor of Hindustan Sindhi Daily Mr. Tirth Sabhani, freelancer - Mr. Mohan Deep and Mr. Sunil Shivdasdani were honoured. Mr. Ram Jawhrani, General Secretary, Priyadarshni Academy, was the convenor of the programme.
Smt. Veena Verma, MP from Madhya Pradesh, was appointed as the Chairperson of the Anti-Dowry Women's Welfare Committee of the Academy.
The appointment of Dr. Niranjan Hiranandani, a prominent social worker as the Chairman of the Afforestation Committee of the Academy was announced by Mr. Nanik Rupani. The Committee is to select the best nominee for the Academy's Afforestation Award for 1989.
