This project was undertaken by "Priyadarshni Academy Forum for Protection of Environment". The Forum consisting of distinguished personalities is a high pressure group was instituted under the Chairmanship of Mr. Y. V. Chandrachud, Former Chief Justice of India. Shortlisted Objectives
Citizen's movement for solid waste management and clean civic habits. The whole plan for environment protection has a logical sequence of growth and evolution.
As its emphasis is on mass involvement, the priorities of activities will be : |
| |
|
 |
Creation of citizens’ groups in individual localities
Many environmentally conscious people of Mumbai have approached us, wishing to contribute to make Mumbai city clean. These citizens’ have been provided with a plan for the campaign on Solid Waste Management and Clean Civic Habits by our Environment Forum. They are forming groups of like-minded individuals in their localities to form local committees. These committees will undertake the task of communicating with inhabitants of their localities, include them in the efforts and constantly enlarge their groups. They will supervise the efforts of garbage segregation in their area and also co-ordinate with the local Ward Officer of BMC regularly. Priyadarshni’s Environment Forum will provide total organisational support and will establish an evaluation process and institute rewards/awards, incentives for the cleanest locality. |

Implementation of a simple, but effective garbage segregation plan.
Disposal of Wet & Dry Waste
Wet kitchen waste like fruits, vegetables, meat, etc., is an excellent soil conditioner. The method of vermi processing can be utilised to convert wet waste into soil enrichment, to grow vegetables, fruits and flowers in the available space in building compounds. Private sector industries are in the process of setting up garbage treatment plants which will produce soil enrichers. The plant’s processing efficiency can be improved if the waste provided to it is segregated right at source into the organic and inorganic. Segregated dry waste can be further separated for re-cycling profitably for the respective industries such as paper, plastic, cloth, metal, wood, glass etc. House Maids and Building Sweepers to be trained to collect the wet and dry waste separately and deposit it in the BMC Bins separately. Local Rag pickers can also be included in this plan. They can be trained to properly segregate the dry wastes as contents i.e. paper, plastic, metal, glass, etc. It will be done to give them a sense of social recognition. Also, they will become a useful contribution to the plan. Regular co-ordination with BMC Local Ward Office, to ensure :
Availability of two separate Bins in each locality to collect segregated wet and dry waste’s.
The BMC garbage collection truck to pick up the separated waste in that form on a daily basis.

Public Awareness Campaign.
Publishing a simple worded and informative booklet on clean civic habits, solid waste management, segregation of garbage at home, planting more trees amongst other issues to carry the message to all sections of our society. The booklet will be subsequently published in Hindi and other regional languages.
Environmental education awareness programmes to be conducted in schools and colleges i.e. qualified speakers to address the students in educational institutions to involve young energies in "Clean the City Campaign" and to initiate the process of social discipline in young members of our society.
Producing short public service films of 60 secs duration with a strong message on Protection of Environment. These films will be shown on prominent TV satellite Channels to create mass public awareness on this subject. Through print media i.e. sustained media campaign by publishing articles on various environmental issues in prominent newspapers and magazines regularly to build up opinions.
Most importantly creating citizen groups in individual localities who will work locally to spread the message of clean civic habits and the management of garbage. They will enlarge their groups and spread the movement by involving more and more people. |

Solid Waste Management
Mumbai generates 6000 + tons of garbage everyday and 70% of it is generated in homes. It consists of wet garbage i.e. fruits, vegetables, meat, etc., and dry waste i.e. metal, glass, paper, plastic etc. Any scheme to effectively handle such large quantities of solid waste materials everyday, becomes economically feasible, only if these wastes are segregated at the point of collection. The mixed wastes as is being handled normally, is a serious source of environmental pollution besides being responsible for spread of infectious diseases. Therefore it is very important to segregate and separately collect wet and dry wastes. The separated waste materials can be processed and made available as variety of engineering / agricultural raw materials. It is practically not possible for BMC to separate this waste everyday due to huge energy cost and manpower required. The only way to tackle the serious problem of garbage in our city is to segregate it in each individual home. This cannot be achieved without people’s involvement on a very substantial scale. |
